A former GDR guardhouse traveled to the United States for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

Exhibition series in Los Angeles: September 26 – November 23, 2014

After a ten-month exhibition series, the ADN Pförtnerhaus a project initiated and curated by Berlin artist Christof Zwiener, will travel from Berlin to Los Angeles for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The guardhouse will be on view in various locations throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties in an additional two-month exhibition series curated by Zwiener. This undertaking will be realized in cooperation with the Wende Museum in Culver City, near Los Angeles, where the ADN Pförtnerhaus project will come to its conclusion. The former East German guardhouse will be presented to the Wende Museum in a ceremonial transfer, thereafter to reside on permanent loan in the Wende's sculpture garden.

With the acquisition of the guardhouse and the beginning of the project ADN Pförtnerhaus in June 2013, the artist Christof Zwiener saved the only such remaining GDR monitoring station in the public space of East Berlin from destruction and eventual disappearance. On the former grounds of the motor pool of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in Lichtenberg on Herzbergstraße, the guardhouse found a new home in September 2013. There the guardhouse was made available as a temporary exhibition space for invited artists who engaged with themes including the legacy of the GDR, state surveillance in general, public space in Berlin and its constant transformation.

The exhibition series in Los Angeles will further this discourse. Regional and international artists including Sonya Schönberger, Bernd Trasberger and Friedrich Kunath will grapple with the consequences of social and political changes, working together with Christof Zwiener. Finally, in the new sculpture park of the Wende Museum on the former grounds of the National Guard Armory in Culver City, the ADN Pförtnerhaus will take its place as an independent installation.

Sonya Schönberger's work for the ADN Pförtnerhaus symbolically reflects the power and influence of the gatekeeper within a system of control. Simultaneously, her installation visualizes the loss of this predominant position due to the loss of a political system. Sonya Schönbergers show SCHLÜSSELÜBERGABE (KEY DELIVERY) will be the last one in Berlin on the terrain of the FAHRBEREITSCHAFT - and therefore gives a very distinct connotation to the chosen title.

Since its inception in 2002, the Wende Museum has been devoted to preserving the material culture of the Cold War and its collection has evolved into a growing repositoryof more than 100,000 artifacts, archives, official and personal histories, and audiovisual holdings that document daily, artistic, and intellectual life behind the Iron Curtain from 1945 to 1991.  The Wende Museum is dedicated to connecting visitors with the lived experience beneath the ideological and geopolitical battles of the Cold War era, and to being a source of inspiration for contemporary comparisons. In 2014, The Wende Museum begins the eco-friendly restoration of The Wende Museum’s new permanent home and headquarters at the former Culver City National Guard Armory. This American Cold War building was constructed in 1949 and is located adjacent to a park dedicated to American veterans. It is the perfect counterpart to The Wende’s mission and collections. The outdoor space on the one-acre site will serve as a sculpture garden and multipurpose community gathering place that will add to the city’s parkland.
